Put the pad in a quiet spot, for example next to the crate. Leave it there, at night too. That way there's always a spot where it's allowed.

No. The pad is a stepping stone: you move it step by step towards the door, outside is the goal. See how owners do it above, under From pad to the front door.

How does the pad keep your floor dry?

The puddle soaks through the soft top into the pad and turns into a kind of gel. The blue underside is waterproof. Put down a clean one as soon as the pad is full and your floor stays dry.
